A riveting story of tribulation, resilience and redemption
In the heart of 1990s America, where basketball reigns supreme and the lure of fame and fortune is intoxicating, Myron Piggie, a former cocaine-dealer turned AAU coach, emerges as a central figure in a tale of redemption, exploitation, and corruption. As the coach of Kansas City’s top AAU basketball super-team, Pig’s street-smart reputation makes him an invaluable asset to the team’s powerful white billionaire sponsor whose dreams of molding young talent into stars align with Pig’s path to self-redemption.
However, this unholy alliance sets the stage for a web of deception and betrayal. The billionaire’s offer, unspoken but implicit, promises lavish rewards in exchange for funneling players to his former University. But, when the players refuse to commit to his alma mater, Pig finds himself ensnared in a trivial conspiracy that lands him back in prison, surrounded by lifers, all for a basketball charge he didn’t commit.
‘Piggie Rules’ transcends one man’s journey. It’s a narrative that unravels the dark underbelly of the AAU circuit, the greed within the NCAA, and the manipulation by corporate interests. It’s the coming-of-age story of 5 future-NBA players, whose lives are forever altered by forces beyond their control. It’s the story of a man who dared to care about his players’ best interests in a world driven by dollars, only to be vilified as the one exploiting them.
This story’s blend of redemption, basketball, and societal commentary set against the backdrop of real-life events offers
a unique and compelling narrative that can engage audiences seeking both sports drama and thought-provoking storytelling.
Like the famous Gatorade campaign in the 1990’s, most black male teenagers in Kansas City, Mo. wanted to “be like Mike." That’s referring to, arguably, the greatest NBA players of all time, Michael Jordan. But, for every kid on a court with a rubber ball in their hand, there was also a kid on a corner with a steel pistol in theirs who wanted be like me. That’s referring to one of the most feared and successful drug-dealers in the city, Myron Piggie. The odds of successfully becoming either were equally slim. But, whether young boys chose to run their suicide drills on a ball court or on a street corner, that decision typically stemmed from the same aspiration. That aspiration was to escape poverty. It just so happened that in Kansas City, during the 1990’s, both of those escape paths were funneled through the same gateway— me.
